To achieve the Diploma of Data Science the learner must complete twelve units.

There are no pre-requisites for any units within this course.

  • Be 18 years of age or over
    Have obtained any one of the following:
    o Certificate IV qualification in ICT.
    o Secondary education in any STEM related subject with minimum ATAR 65
    (or equivalent).
    mathematics, business, accounting, finance or equivalent.
    o Bachelor’s degree in any applicable field e.g. IT, engineering, science.
  • For international students, a study score of at least:
    o 30 in English (EAL) or
    o 25 in English (non-EAL)

It is recommended entrants have:

  • Prior knowledge of coding language(s).
  • High level literacy and numeracy levels; sufficient to interpret
    mathematical equations and prepare written reports.

The intended vocational outcomes for the Diploma of Data Science course include:

  • Data Analyst
  • Data Scientist. 
The qualification produces data scientists or analysts with high level skills and knowledge to code, analyse and solve complex data related problems using computing, mathematical and statistical techniques.

An individual in this role can analyse or develop software solutions to solve complex data problems. An individual can use techniques of data collection, exploration and analysis, machine learning, statistics and mathematics in data related problem solving and generate useful insights.

Specialist functions and Skills

  • Develop and apply knowledge in a broad range of methods based on statistics and computing and use these for analysis and problem solving
  • Identify approaches to solve specific problems using data, making sense out of data and automating the process of decision making.
  • Use appropriate methods, tools and techniques for data collection and analysis.

Graduates of the Diploma of Data Science will have a range of reasoning, communication and technical skills. They will have the ability to (under subject matter expert’s supervision):

  • Use mathematical and statistical techniques to analyse data, generate useful insights & recommendations.
  • Build and deploy software to cloud platforms and identify relevant software tools for solving data related problems.
  • Apply ethical principals in assessing data and libraries on cloud platforms.
  • Identify and implement machine learning techniques for problem solving and data analysis using supervised and 
unsupervised methods.
  • Use data structures and implement data handling operations for data storage and retrieval.
  • Analyse databases and big data for information retrieval and understand their need in data‐driven organisations.
  • Apply technical writing and oral communication skills to fluently articulate ideas and concepts about software.
  • Develop skills to organise an agile plan for a data related project.
